Province drives innovation with high-tech nuclear technology
The province of North Brabant is investing €4 million in the further development of a molten salt reactor (MSR). This innovative project, called PROMOSA, is being carried out by a consortium of Thorizon, VDL Groep and DEMCON, and focuses on developing crucial components for a new generation of nuclear reactors. The goal: a safe, scalable and sustainable energy source for the future.
With this investment, North Brabant is strengthening its position as a hub for high-tech innovation and supporting the transition to clean and affordable energy. The high temperatures this reactor produces can also be used for green hydrogen production, which aligns with the region's sustainability ambitions.
Molten Salt Reactors: The Future of Nuclear Energy
Molten salt reactors (MSRs) belong to the category of Small Modular Reactors (SMRs), compact nuclear reactors that can be produced modularly in factories. Unlike traditional nuclear power plants, MSRs use liquid salt both as a coolant and as a carrier of the nuclear fuel. This offers several advantages:
Inherent safety: In the event of a malfunction, the salt solidifies, automatically stopping the nuclear reaction.
Reuse of nuclear waste: The reactor can use existing nuclear waste as fuel, contributing to waste reduction.
Scalability: A single reactor can supply energy to 250,000 households or a large data center.
Application in hydrogen production: The high temperatures are ideal for green hydrogen production, which is essential for the energy transition.
According to Kiki Lauwers, CEO of Thorizon, the investment marks an important step towards realization:
“Thanks to the support of the province, together with Brabant's manufacturing industry we can take the first steps from the drawing board to producing actual components.”
International Recognition for Dutch Innovation
Thorizon's technology has also attracted international attention. The Thorizon One reactor has been selected by the European Commission as one of nine flagship projects for the accelerated development of new nuclear reactors in Europe.
Provincial executive Martijn van Gruijthuijsen emphasizes the importance of this recognition:
“This European selection confirms that in Brabant we are at the forefront of this innovative technology. By investing in knowledge development now, our companies will be able to play an important role in this growing market.”
Brabant's Manufacturing Industry and High-Tech Sector Benefit
The province of North Brabant has a strong manufacturing industry and boasts world-class research facilities, such as the DIFFER research institute in Eindhoven. The collaboration between Thorizon, VDL Groep and DEMCON accelerates the reactor's industrialization.
Brabant's high-tech industry benefits in several ways:
New market opportunities for innovative companies in energy and technology.
Strengthening the competitive position of the Dutch manufacturing industry.
Employment and economic growth in the region.
With this investment, the province is financing 50% of the total project costs (€8 million), while the remaining funding is provided by the participating companies.
The Roadmap: From Development to Realization
The PROMOSA project has a duration of two and a half years, during which the following steps will be taken:
Development and testing of crucial reactor components.
Construction of a test facility in Brabant.
Preparation for scaling up to series production.
Thorizon aims to begin construction of the first reactor in 2030.
According to Van Gruijthuijsen, this project offers enormous potential for the region:
“This is a good example of how in Brabant we work on smart solutions for the challenges of today and tomorrow.”
Sustainable Energy & Hydrogen: Impact on the Energy Transition
In addition to the development of clean nuclear energy, the molten salt reactor also offers opportunities for other sectors, such as the production of green hydrogen. This aligns perfectly with Brabant's ambitions in the field of energy storage and sustainable industrial processes.
With this investment, North Brabant firmly puts itself on the map as a frontrunner in innovative energy technology and contributes to a reliable, safe and sustainable energy supply for the future.
