Advionics invests in expansion to meet growing demand
Belgian radar developer Advionics, a specialist in high-frequency technology, is taking a major step in its expansion. The company is increasing its production capacity by 50% through the construction of an additional 6,000-square-metre production hall. This is a direct response to the growing demand for radar equipment, driven in part by rising defence budgets worldwide.
Innovative radar solutions for the defence and medical sectors
Advionics develops and manufactures advanced radar technology for both military and civilian applications. The company's flagship is a groundbreaking IFF antenna (Identification Friend or Foe) that rotates electronically rather than mechanically.
CEO Jan Bonte explains: “A standard IFF antenna rotates mechanically, but our product uses 64 antenna radiating elements that are switched electronically. This makes the system faster, more reliable and less maintenance-sensitive. What's more, when installed on a frigate, our system can electronically compensate for the ship's movements.”
In addition to defence, Advionics also plays a role in the medical sector. The company's technology is used, for example, in radiotherapy for cancer treatment.
Sustainable growth and additional employment
With this expansion, Advionics is responding to structural market growth. “The defence orders we are receiving now already run through to 2030. This is not a temporary peak, but a long-term growth trend,” says Bonte.
Advionics currently employs 200 people, but the expansion will add 50 new jobs. The company supplies customers including the United States, Germany and the Belgian army.
“We want to continue applying our expertise to the military defence market and, together with other players, tackle the major challenges facing Europe,” Bonte concludes.
