Chinese start-up InfiMaker is pushing the miniaturisation of machining technology. With the InfiMaker K1, the company presents a five-axis machining centre that, according to the manufacturer, moves in all axes simultaneously yet remains small and light enough to sit on an ordinary desk.
Small footprint, serious specifications
The machine weighs just 110 kilograms, a fraction of the mass of conventional five-axis milling machines, which typically weigh several tonnes and require a dedicated foundation. Despite its compact dimensions, InfiMaker claims a repeatability of 0.01 mm. That positions the K1 for applications where precision matters more than a large working volume.
AI-driven CAM
The accompanying software stands out. The K1 ships with a CAM system built around artificial intelligence. It is said to turn images directly into an NC programme for the machine, skipping the manual steps usually involved in work preparation. For users without deep programming experience, that could lower the barrier to five-axis milling.
What it means for manufacturing
The target price is striking: InfiMaker is aiming for roughly €5,000. That is an order of magnitude below the investment tied to professional five-axis equipment. For prototyping, education, R&D departments and small workshops, such a device could be an attractive way to test ideas quickly and close to the bench.
Questions remain about how the machine performs against established equipment in real-world use. A compact build with limited weight quickly runs into constraints on rigidity, cutting force and material choice. For production runs in tough metals, a desktop machine will not replace industrial systems. As an accessible entry point, however, the K1 could help spread the use of simultaneous five-axis milling more widely.
